Basque Country

It is Day 3 of our walking, and it must go without saying that we are sore! The landscape has been amazing! On our first day we crossed the Pyrenees mountains to Roncesvalles. That was a killer day! Thoughts of "why didn´t I train with my pack on?" crossed our minds. But we made it and then had a bit of a shock as we realized how many lady pilgrims vied for the two women´s showers available at the inn we stayed in. Our inn was a converted hospital tied to the cathedral and convent, one large cavernous room with hundreds of bunk beds in rows. It still takes a bit of getting used to the amounts of people constantly around.

Day 2 was forested. We walked through verdant magical tunnels, some that made me think of that great animated film, My Neighbor Totoro. We took a long lunch break in a tiny town like many of the ones we pass through. These Basque towns are enchanting--clean for sure! Houses are whitewashed with stone-framed doorways and windows. Shutters painted dark red contrast nicely with the white walls; bright potted flowers bloom from every window and by every door.

This morning as we left Larrasoaña, where we had breakfast, we noted how not only are newspapers delivered to homeowners´doors, but also baguettes, hanging in cloth bread bags on little door nails! Day 3, today, was partially rainy. We passed through the suburbs of Pamplona looking like two hunchback frogs in our green rain ponchos! We didn´t stop enough today, we realized, as we just pushed through to Pamplona. And now we have rested somewhat, toured the medieval castle and eaten a filling meal. Bedtime is early, since we want to get started around six in the morning.

It is only the third day, and it seems my grasp of time is slipping. Paris is a world away, as is the French border where we started. I have enjoyed the mountain scenery, thistles and wild undergrowth along the paths we walk. Yet my mind is still getting disentangled from Finland, I don´t know if I´m completely "here" yet. Getting there!

My time on the internet is running out, and it is very near time for lights out. I do love to fall asleep tired! Greetings to all!
